Three police officers were hurt and 29 supporters arrested today because the spectre of hooliganism returned to English football within the weekend. Where 14 lovers were arrested after fighting broke out during the FA Cup semi-final between Millwall and Wigan Athletic, the arrests following a North-east derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland today followed disturbances on Saturday at Wembley. Police said recently that missiles were thrown inside their path as several Newcastle fans tried to face Sunderland supporters in Central Station, Newcastle, after the house sideas 0-3 defeat at St Jamesa Park. Key Superintendent Steve Neill of Northumbria Police said: aThe vast majority of supporters were well-behaved today. aDisappointingly, there was some problem involving what look like Newcastle United supporters following the fit in the city center, including an event at Central Station. aDisruptive conduct of any kind is not accepted. Place will be taken by inquiries in to these situations and action will be studied against all those involved. For folks who thought we would try disruptive behavior they were sometimes dealt with swiftly by officials or will be subject to retrospective motion at a later date.a On Saturday, 14 men were caught after Millwall fans began fighting with one another during the 2nd 1 / 2 of their 0-2 defeat by Wigan, in troubling views which left youngsters in tears and were seen by millions on television. Scotland Yard said 12 of the held were Millwall followers and two Wigan fans. Studies suggested the violence may have been sparked by two people fighting in the stands.
