8 NBA Rookies Falling Short of the Hype
Coming up on the All-Star break, we're starting to get a vague outline of which NBA rookies may end up being busts. It's too early to form any truly definitive conclusions, but the eight NBA rookies included in this slideshow have disappointed, whether it be due to mediocre play or due to just not receiving minutes.
There are always certain expectations from lottery picks, and five of the eight players in this slideshow were taken in the first 14 picks of the 2012 NBA draft.
It's strange to say there was a lot of hype for a No. 28 overall pick, but in Perry Jones III's case, there actually was. Throngs of NBA analysts and fans were quick to proclaim Jones as a sleeper candidate from this draft and a guy who just flat out never should have slipped.
As to whether this notion will eventually be proven true is anyone's guess. Jones has seen just 121 minutes at the NBA level, and the numbers he's put up are inconclusive (and uninspiring).
Jones is shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and averaging 9.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per-36. His PER is just 4.5. Yes, it's off a small sample size of minutes, but it doesn't bode well, does it?
John Jenkins shot an airball that fell about five feet short of the goal against the Chicago Bulls in the game in which the Hawks tied the second-worst scoring night in NBA history (since the shot clock inception). It was one of the worst attempts at a jumper I'd seen on the NBA level in the 22 years I have been watching NBA basketball.
Jenkins is shooting 42.2 percent from the floor this season and a pretty respectable 38.8 percent from three, but that shot alone scared me.
His PER is just 10.5, too, so indications are that he isn't stacking up as a shooting guard, though given his 11.2 minutes per game over 29 NBA contests, it's hard to form any really concrete conclusions yet.
Royce White has disappointed a lot of people this year, and the situation is so sticky it's something I've skirted writing about all year. It's kind of one of those things that has to continually be rehashed, but there's plenty of it on the internet.
The real knock on Kendall Marshall coming out of North Carolina was that he couldn't shoot the ball well enough. That has continued to prove to be the case, as the shot just 31 percent in the D-League. He was assigned to play in the D-League in November, and while his progress has been slow, Suns coach Alvin Gentry does believe that Marshall has a future in the league.
Gentry told Arizona Sports that "as a coach improving in the shooting is the least of your worries because it's something that everybody's gotten better at over the course of years in the NBA."
That's true often. The number of players that have obtained jumpers through hard work in the offseason is long enough to produce a top-50 slideshow of "Guys Who Gained a J." Jason Kidd is the most shining example from the point guard position.
If Marshall can add a 'J' to his arsenal, the rest of his skill set would do the work. But not everyone is as talented as Rajon Rondo, who was able to persist for years before he, too, added a jumper.
So, if Marshall is as good as Gentry believes he is, the jumper should fix the only part broken on the car. Marshall has played just 67 minutes in the NBA.
It's not really Jeremy Lamb's fault that he hasn't lived up to the hype. Had he remained in Houston, he likely would have seen some time backing up Kevin Martin and had a productive rookie season. Instead, he found himself becoming the third/fourth string shooting guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The result is that Lamb has seen just 64 minutes all season. That small sample size is hardly even worth analyzing for statistical relevance and value, so the "Incomplete" that Lamb would be graded thus far registers as a true disappointment.
Again: It's not really Lamb's fault he isn't getting minutes, but he can't fulfill the expectations that accompany being a lottery pick when he's shot 28 field goals all season.
Lamb spent time in the D-League for the Tulsa 66ers, and initially wasn't thrilled at the prospect, saying that he felt it was a disappointment when he was drafted to play in the NBA. He later said he "understood the value and it made a lot of sense."
It's good to see Lamb growing as a person and as a player, and the jury is definitely still out on his star potential, as we won't truly find out until he receives a chance to play in the Association more.
Before the season started John Hollinger of ESPN wrote (subscription required) that "statistically, the only number that makes him a lottery pick is 7-1...ordinary rebound and blocked-shot rates for a college center."
Well, nothing has changed there. Leonard is averaging is averaging a very uninspiring line despite his frame, posting just 7.7 rebounds per-36, and 1.5 blocks per-36. About the only thing he's done remarkably well is shoot free throws (he's hitting a guard-like 85 percent from the charity stripe).
Leonard has found himself relegated to fringe backup minutes because J.J. Hickson is having a phenomenal year, and they have used Hickson at the 5-spot.
Coming into the season, many depth charts listed Leonard as the starting center, but that just hasn't worked out due to his rather mediocre post game and overall rawness.
Leonard still needs more time in the weight room and some legitimate tutoring from a former NBA big man (The "Hoops Whisperer," Hakeem Olajuwon, seems to only accept clients with a ton of potential). If Leonard could utilize the god-given gift of being a legit 7-foot-1, then maybe he would justify that lottery pick.
But as Hollinger forecasted and hinted prior to the season, it didn't do him much good in college, so why would it in the NBA?
Austin Rivers really should have stayed in school another year. He just hasn't been ready for NBA competition, and he's struggled mightily with his shot all season. Rivers is shooting just 33.4 percent from the floor and a hair over 30 percent from three, and he also doesn't boast a very good assist to turnover ratio (1.7:1).
Most perplexing of all is that Rivers, who wasn't really a good freer throw shooter at Duke (65 percent) has been atrocious from the line in the pros, hitting just 54 percent from the line.
That is downright disgusting from a guard, never mind one that is supposed to be considered a shooter, and a scorer. Another year at the NCAA level definitely would have allowed Rivers to work more heavily on his fundamentals, which seem to be lacking, despite his pedigree.
It would be easy to call Thomas Robinson a disappointment in light of the fact he averages just five points and under five rebounds per game, but Robinson has improved his play throughout the season and his per-minute production isn't bad. Per-36, Robinson posts 11.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and over one steal and one block.
Reasonably, Robinson still should project to be a starter in a few season's time. He's athletic and other than being a bit of a tweener as a forward, has a lot of favorable traits to thrive at the NBA level, including good instinct offensively and a great motor.
It's just that thus far it has translated to only 16 minutes a game on a Kings team high on talent and low on wins. The Kansas forward will have a more prominent role eventually, but hasn't received the kind of burn that typical top-5 picks receive.
Robinson has posted three double-doubles this season, and had a 12 point, 14 rebound performance against Phoenix on Jan. 23, so the potential to be a real player down the line is there. He's also thrown down a number of show stopping highlights (see video). The flashes have been there, the only thing that remains is whether they are flashes in the pan or real silver.

I can still remember my reaction the first time I saw the original Spider putter from TaylorMade Golf. I thought it looked like a spaceship on the end of a putter shaft. It was radical looking and it was big. I demoed the putter a bit here and there, but I never wound up falling in love with it. The original Spider putter would go on to become a huge hit for TaylorMade. It was such a popular putter that the company decided to 'ghost' it last year. Since then, the Ghost Spider has become a rock star in TaylorMade's lineup full of great putters. Never a company to rest their laurels, TaylorMade set out to redesign a putter that so many people already loved.

Looks and feel are very subjective characteristics of a golf club, particularly a putter. Having said that, I think the new look of the Ghost Spider S is outstanding. There are no more distracting curves and lines when you're standing over this putter. Instead, you have the contrast of the white frame and a newly designed black crown with a single white alignment line. This contrast helps make the Ghost Spider S one of the easiest putters to align that I've ever used. The sole of the Ghost Spider S is similar to the original Ghost Spider, but instead of the black spider web graphic, the S features a red sole with a Ghost Spider S badge in the middle. The Ghost Spider S also has a great looking and feeling grip in red, black and white that really ties the overall package together. A putter this cool looking has to come with a slick head cover and that is just what you get here. Primarily white, the spider web and spider graphics of the head cover really make for a nice looking and very easy to use head cover.
One word that I'd use to describe the feel of the Ghost Spider S would be smooth. In fact, TaylorMade could tell me right now that the S stands for smooth and I'd have to believe it 100%. Whether you agree with the shape of the putter or not, you simply can't deny that this thing just gives back an amazingly soft and smooth feel when you stroke a golf ball. The Pure Roll insert is back, but this one is different to me. I've tried multiple Ghost putters with the Pure Roll insert, and while I have always liked the roll of the golf ball, I haven't always loved the feel off the face. I was expecting something similar this time around, but I was pleasantly surprised the second I rolled my first putt. The audible sound is almost nonexistent and the feel you get is equally soft. In my opinion, smooth perfectly describes both the feel and the sound of the Ghost Spider S putter.
MOI is something that seems to be talked about more with drivers than it does putters, but to me, MOI is more important on the greens than anywhere else on the golf course. On the putting surface, a fraction of an inch can cost you precious strokes and can be the difference between a one-putt birdie and a three-putt bogey. The Ghost Spider S delivers an amazingly high MOI measurement of 6,030 according to TaylorMade. That number is dramatically higher than previous mallets such as the Ghost Manta (4,900) and Corza Ghost (3,830). I found that the Ghost Spider S was not only incredibly easy to align, but I also felt like I hit my targets more consistently the more I used the putter in my testing.
Prior to testing the Ghost Spider S, I was using a blade-style putter. I've been a mallet guy most of my golfing life, but recently decided to make the switch to a blade. I didn't make the switch because I rolled mallets poorly, but because I just like the looks of a blade putter better. One thing that really took me by surprise was just how little effort it took to get the golf ball to the hole with the Spider S. Even on long putts, I didn't have to take a big swipe at the ball to get it to the hole. That, in addition to the forgiveness I got from this putter, makes me wonder why I would even think of going back to a blade when this review is over.
The more I rolled putts with the Spider S, the more I really started to love the overall feel of it. By that, I mean the feeling of confidence and the sense that I was going to put a good roll on the ball. That really freed me up and allowed me to pick my line and confidently roll the ball. My putts-per-round stats haven't immediately dropped down to Tour Pro level, but I do believe that putting this in the bag has made me a better putter and that will ultimately give way to lower scores.
The model of the Ghost Spider S that I tested was equipped with the standard hosel. The putter will also be available with a Tour-inspired "short slant" hosel, which is designed for the player who has an arced putting stroke. Unlike the standard hosel, which promotes a straight-back straight thru swing path, the short-slant is toe-weighted and broadens the scope of players who can benefit from the performance characteristics of the Ghost Spider S.
"Performance Mallet putter use on the PGA Tour has grown during the past decade to where, today, more than 30% of PGA Tour pros use a mallet," added Fox. "We're confident that Tour pros and amateurs who favor a mallet will want to explore Ghost Spider S because the performance benefits are impossible to ignore."
I'm a firm believer in the saying "the proof is in the pudding", or in this case, the proof is in the putting. In just its second official week on the PGA Tour at the Wyndham Championship, the Ghost Spider S was already the number one overall putter in play with six. The looks are great, the feel is great, and the performance certainly backs up both extremely well. I haven't always been the biggest fan of putters with an insert, but with the feel and the roll I got from the Pure Roll in the Ghost Spider S, I definitely believe that this putter could find a permanent spot in my bag.
As I mentioned earlier, the word smooth just keeps resonating in my mind with the Spider S. The multi-material head (aluminum and steel) has such a nice overall feel to it. Hitting my line with this putter is very easy and that equates to holing more putts. The few short weeks the Ghost Spider S has been in my bag have definitely been fun. It took a while to get used to the shape and the size, but the more I did, the more the putts started to drop.
The Ghost Spider S standard model is available on November, 1, 2012 for $179 in standard length and $199 in a belly model. The Ghost Spider S featuring the "short slant" hosel will hit the market a month later, on December 1, 2012.

Grading Early Tasks of the 2013 World Baseball Classic's Top 25 Players
Just ask Miguel Cabrera and Team Venezuela, eliminated from advancing to the second round after dropping its first two games in Pool C.
Some of those players have risen to the occasion, putting forth outstanding performances and guiding their respective national teams to success and a shot at WBC glory.
Carlos Beltran's RBI double off Spain's Yoanner Negrin in the first inning of Puerto Rico's opening game keyed the host nation's three-run inning, more than enough runs to take down Spain, 3-0.
While many fans—myself included—were surprised that Beltran and company were able to take down Miguel Cabrera and the mighty Venezuelan squad, the All-Star outfielder was not, as he told MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo:
I think Venezuela has a great team, and obviously their roster is basically all big leaguers. But we are not surprised with the victory. Maybe some of fans were because they think baseball is characterized by the roster, and it's really not so. Baseball is characterized when you go out onto the baseball field. The best one that plays wins, and we did a great job.
Considering that Puerto Rico has advanced past the first round in each of the three World Baseball Classics held so far, perhaps we shouldn't be as surprised by the team's success—and Beltran's play—after all.
Ryan Braun hit a couple of long foul balls against Italy in the United States' second game of the 2013 World Baseball Classic, but the player who has driven in 223 runs for the Milwaukee Brewers since 2011 has yet to notch even a single RBI thus far.
While he's left four batters on base—all coming against Italy, including grounding into a double play in the top of the first inning with Jimmy Rollins and Brandon Phillips on base—Braun has still put together a solid performance for Team USA.
That said, Braun needs to start delivering with runners in scoring position if the United States is to have a chance to challenge for the championship.
People not familiar with the Cleveland Indians wouldn't know that Asdrubal Cabrera was an All-Star shortstop based on his performance at the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
Cabrera has failed to record a hit through two games, reaching base twice on a pair of walks against the Dominican Republic in Venezuela's losing effort to open its WBC campaign.
Against Puerto Rico in a must-win game, Cabrera was completely ineffective, striking out twice. When he did get on base, courtesy of being hit by a Nelson Figueroa pitch, Cabrera made the unwise decision to try to score on Pablo Sandoval's RBI double and was thrown out at the plate to end the third inning.
When looking for a reason why Venezuela struggled in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, most eyes will fall squarely on the broad shoulders of the reigning American League MVP, Miguel Cabrera, widely considered to be the best baseball player on the planet.
Miggy has been invisible through two games, managing only a meaningless first-inning single against Nelson Figueroa and Puerto Rico on Saturday, a game Venezuela lost 6-3.
Instead, Venezuela will finish the 2013 World Baseball Classic without advancing to the second round for the first time in history.
If Robinson Cano hit like this in the postseason, he might have more than one World Series ring to show for his efforts since becoming the starting second baseman for the New York Yankees in 2005.
Cano has been nothing short of spectacular for the Dominican Republic, driving the ball with authority all over the field. Were Edwin Encarnacion at the top of his game, Cano would certainly have scored more than a pair of runs, considering how often he has found himself on base.
R.A. Dickey was part of the United States contingent that took home a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, winning each of his starts against international competition.
The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner wasn't able to repeat that success in his first start for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, getting knocked around by Mexico in a 5-2 defeat in front of a pro-Mexico crowd at Chase Field in Arizona.
Now a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, Dickey was shaky in both of his spring training starts before joining Team USA, allowing five earned runs and eight hits over five innings of work.
Both the United States and the Blue Jays need Dickey to get his game back on track if either has a chance of making a run at a championship.
The powerful bat that Edwin Encarnacion swung for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012 has been nowhere to be found through his first two games in the WBC.
Aside from a sacrifice fly in the second inning of the Dominican Republic's 9-3 victory over Venezuela, the 30-year-old first baseman has by-and-large been a non-factor.
Thankfully for Encarnacion, his teammates have picked up the slack, making his lack of production far less of an issue than it could be.
Playing in a league with pitchers like Gio Gonzalez, Clayton Kershaw and Stephen Strasburg, it's easy to overlook how good Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo actually is.
Gallardo needed only 37 pitches to get through the first three innings of the game, erasing Joe Mauer's leadoff single in the second inning by getting David Wright to ground into a double play.
He likely could have gone deeper into the game, approaching the WBC-limit of 65 pitches for a starter, but as Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan noted, the Milwaukee Brewers put a strict 50-pitch limit on the ace of their staff.
While Mexico won't be advancing to the second round of WBC action, Gallardo's performance has nothing to do with it.
If there was a MVP award handed out for the first round of WBC play, Mexico's Adrian Gonzalez would garner serious consideration.
After accounting for three of Mexico's four runs through three innings of play against the United States, the Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman never saw another pitch to hit, being walked in each of his next three plate appearances.
His six walks lead all batters in the tournament, and while Mexico's tournament run has come to an end, Gonzalez did everything he could to keep the underdogs alive.
Dodgers fans may want to send thanks to former Colorado Rockies All-Star outfielder Larry Walker, who is serving as the batting coach for Team Canada.
As a bench-clearing brawl ensued between Mexico and Canada, Walker went out of his way to protect the All-Star, as Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan reports via Twitter:
Like his teammate Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Gonzalez has failed to produce at the plate for Venezuela, managing to record only one hit in eight at-bats and a big reason why one of the favorites to win the World Baseball Classic has been eliminated from advancing to the second round of play.
While there's no denying that Gonzalez is a supremely talented player—a five-tool player for sure—that he's struggled outside the confines of Coors Field shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
In 68 home games last season, Gonzalez posted a .368/.437/.609 slash line with 13 home runs and 58 RBI. In 67 games on the road, he wasn't even close to the same player, posting a .231/.301/.405 line with nine home runs and 27 RBI.
Unless the 2016 World Baseball Classic is going to be played at Coors Field, Venezuela may want to think twice about inviting CarGo to take part in the fourth edition of the tournament.
While Adam Jones hasn't done much with the bat in his hands so far for the United States, he' got things started for Team USA against Italy in the fifth inning with a leadoff walk, eventually scoring the game-tying run before David Wright put the Americans ahead for good with a grand slam shortly thereafter.
Despite his rather poor numbers at the plate—and misplaying a fly ball in the bottom of the second inning that wound up sailing over his head for a RBI double and a 2-0 Italy lead—Jones has put his athleticism and speed on display, making big plays on balls that most other outfielders couldn't get to.
It's only a matter of time before the balls that Jones hit start finding something other than the opposition's glove.
*For the record, Jones was one of five players (other notables include George Sherrill and Chris Tillman) that the Orioles received from Seattle in exchange for Bedard. A bad deal for Seattle indeed.
Much to the relief of its opponents, the United States and manager Joe Torre have yet to call on reliever Craig Kimbrel in the World Baseball Classic.
Arguably the best closer in the game, Kimbrel, 24, has been as close to Mariano Rivera-esque as a pitcher can be, dominating opposing batters to the tune of a 1.61 ERA and 0.87 WHIP over the past two seasons, averaging three walks and nearly 16 strikeouts per nine innings of work.
If and when Kimbrel gets into a game, the United States will expect nothing but a dominating performance from one of the younger members of the squad.
One of the most prolific hitting catchers in baseball history, Joe Mauer came through in the clutch twice for the United States against Italy in a must-win game for the Americans.
Mauer got Team USA on the board in the fourth inning with a RBI double, cutting Italy's 2-0 lead in half, but it was his plate appearance in the following inning that made all the difference in the world.
With two runners on and two outs, Mauer worked a walk against Matt Tora, loading the bases and giving David Wright a chance to put the Americans ahead—something the third baseman accomplished with one swing as he cleared the bases.
The best catcher in the world has put on a clinic through two games of the World Baseball Classic, guiding a largely unproven and mediocre pitching staff to the lowest ERA (1.50) and WHIP (0.83) of the tournament and a spot in the second round of play.
Washington Nationals superstar outfielder Bryce Harper, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year, could barely contain himself while watching Molina play:
Simply put, there is no way that Puerto Rico advances to the second round of the World Baseball Classic without Molina behind the plate, leading the way.
After years of battling injuries and concussions, Canada (and Minnesota Twins) first baseman Justin Morneau is swinging the bat like he did when he won the American League MVP award back in 2006.
Morneau went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI against Mexico in Canada's second game of the tournament, putting his team in position to advance to the second round with a victory against the United States on Sunday.
Most importantly, Morneau managed to stay out of the fracas that erupted between Canada and Mexico, a wise choice considering his long injury history.
With the United States trailing Italy 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips delivered a game-tying RBI single, scoring on David Wright's grand slam three batters later.
Italy's Mario Charini hit a scorcher towards the hole between second base and shortstop. Phillips dove to his right, and from a sitting position, fired the ball to first base, nailing Charini to end the inning and keep momentum firmly on the side of the United States.
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, who has seen his fair share of outstanding plays over his career, was truly impressed by Phillips' effort:

Now if only Phillips' bat would catch up to his glove, the United States would be in better shape heading into Sunday's crucial game against Canada.
Hanley Ramirez may only have one hit in six at-bats—a 404-foot blast to left field off Puerto Rico's Jhoulys Chacin that gave the Dominican Republic a 6-3 lead that it wouldn't surrender—but the Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman continues to get on base despite hitting the ball right at defenders.
After a 2012 season that saw his strikeout rate increase to 19.1 percent and his walk rate drop to 8.1 percent—his worst numbers since 2007 (per FanGraphs)—that Ramirez has drawn a walk in nearly 50 percent of his plate appearances without striking out is nothing short of miraculous.
He's provided solid defense at the hot corner, and if he can keep this up, it's only a matter of time before the hits start falling and his numbers across the board become even more impressive for the Dominican Republic.
Against Venezuela, Jose Reyes was unstoppable, reaching base safely in each of his first four at-bats before finally recording an out with the game's outcome already decided.
While he failed to deliver a similar performance against Spain, Reyes' speed came into play in the top of the third inning and his team leading 2-0.
Reyes drew a leadoff walk from Spanish starter Yoanner Negrin, who proceeded to throw the ball away on a pickoff attempt, allowing Reyes to advance to third base, where he'd be driven in by Robinson Cano on a RBI double two batters later.
It'd be nice if Reyes could launch a ball into a gap in the outfield and put his wheels on display for the world to see, but there's really nothing to complain about with his performance in the tournament thus far.
With two outs, the bases load and the Dominican Republic leading Spain by four runs, Fernando Rodney was called upon to close things out in the bottom of the ninth inning.
After walking Barbaro Canizares, forcing Engel Beltre in from third base, Rodney settled down, striking out Rafael Alvarez and clinching a spot in the second round of play for the Dominican Republic.
That Rodney, who walked only 15 batters in 74.2 innings of work for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012, has already issued two free passes is a bit concerning. But the soon-to-be 36-year-old closer has yet to allow a hit—meaning his issues are a matter of command, not that his stuff simply isn't any good.
You can be sure that Rodney will work out the kinks and get himself straightened out before the Dominican Republic takes the field in the second round of action.
Scheduled to start the final game of the first round for the Dominican Republic against Puerto Rico on Sunday afternoon at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Wandy Rodriguez told reporters that he's not at all concerned about the names that litter the host nation's lineup (h/t ASAP Sports):
"Yes, I saw the lineup, Puerto Rico's lineup. It's a great lineup. But as I told you a little while ago, I'm going to always try to locate the pitches where I believe I should throw them."
That confidence needs to translate to quality innings if the Dominican Republic is going to run the table in Pool C and improve to 9-4 all-time in WBC action.
There's just something about the World Baseball Classic that appeals to Jimmy Rollins, the All-Star shortstop for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Rollins, 34, has bat leadoff for manager Joe Torre's squad and picked up a pair of hits in each of the United States two games thus far, putting the veteran in a class by himself when it comes to the World Baseball Classic, as USA Baseball made note of via Twitter:
Considering some of the names that have littered the American roster in each of the previous two World Baseball Classics, that's an incredibly impressive feat.
He'll need to continue swinging a hot bat if Team USA is going to put the struggles of the past behind them in 2013.
Giancarlo Stanton has yet to show the world the incredible raw power that he possesses in his swing, failing to record a hit in seven at-bats for the United States.
While he hasn't contributed much to the cause, Stanton did show improved plate discipline against Italy in his second game, working a 13-pitch walk against Brian Sweeney in the top of the seventh inning. Kansas City's Eric Hosmer failed to capitalize, fouling out on a pop-up to third base.
If the United States is going to make a serious run at a World Baseball Classic title, Stanton needs to start making opposing pitchers pay for throwing to him in the first place.
With Italy up by a score of 2-0 and on the cusp of blowing the game wide open, future first ballot Hall of Famer and United States pitching coach Greg Maddux paid starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong a visit on the mound during the second inning of the United States' must-win game on Saturday night.
Whatever Maddux told Vogelsong worked, as the right-hander buckled down, working out of a jam and eventually sending four consecutive Italian batters down on strikes, starting with the final out of the third inning.
Vogelsong wasn't great, but he did enough to keep the United States in the game—and that's all manager Joe Torre could ask from the No. 2 starter in his rotation.
Joey Votto hasn't done much at the plate, but the perennial MVP candidate has shown his usual solid judgement for Team Canada through two games of the WBC.
Votto ignored a stop sign at third base and scored the opening run for Canada in the top of the first inning against Mexico, only to give a run back in the bottom of the inning on a throwing error while trying to turn a 3-6-1 double play, cutting Canada's lead to 4-1 in what ultimately was a brawl-filled 10-3 Canadian win.
Speaking of the brawl, it would have been easy for Votto, a physically imposing figure at 6'3" and 225 pounds, to get involved and start moving people out of the way.
Instead, Votto stood to the side, watching the chaos unfurl before him and not taking more than a step towards the action.
Both Canadian manager Ernie Whitt and Cincinnati Reds skipper Dusty Baker certainly breathed a sigh of relief once they realized that Votto wasn't involved, keeping the All-Star firmly out of harm's way.
That said, Votto needs to do more than be disciplined if Canada is going to make a deep run in the tournament. Hits from Votto—especially with runners on base—will be imperative for that to happen.
Without David Wright's heroics, there's a very good chance that the United States' third game of the opening round against Canada would be for nothing more than bragging rights.
With the game tied at two and with two outs, Wright sent Matt Tora's offering 410 feet into the left-center field stands, giving the United States a 6-2 lead on what was only the second grand slam in World Baseball Classic history.
(Former Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek hit the first one, also for the United States, in the 2006 WBC against Canada).
Wright's play has apparently given Team USA catcher J.P. Arencibia some direction, as the 27-year-old backstop for the Toronto Blue Jays tweeted that he finally knows what—or rather who—he wants to be when he gets older:
The United States needs Wright to continue coming through in the clutch on Sunday night, as it faces a win-or-go-home scenario against Canada.

Newcastle would normally be considered a hard test for Manchester City, but the Magpies are plagued with accidents while they gear up for a conflict at the Etihad Stadium Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini may have admitted the Premier League name, but he'll still need his side to create a strong finish to the growing season while they undertake a resurgent Newcastle. The Magpies are nearly clear of a relegation fight they drifted too near for comfort to, though they will find a hardcore task to it to grab something at the home of the Premier League champions. The task is likely to be made all of the harder by way of a swathe of injuries to hit the Newcastle team as they withstand just one more injury disaster, even though the loves of Mathieu Debuchy and Cheik Tiote should return for their next fitting. In most, it will on paper be considered a cozy gain for the Citizens, but they have been fairly unstable this season, and Newcastle undoubtedly have a lot more to play for. Therefore could certainly maybe not be dismissed as a risk, they'll also still have the kind of Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cisse within their ranks. The first thing that obviously grabs your attention with the X-Hot driver is the finish. Callaway has stepped outside the box by choosing to go with a matte gunmetal gray finish on the crown. There is no doubt that it is a 460cc driver, yet it is in a subdued style that doesn't seem all that large to your eye. Obviously the finish plays a role in this though as well. All in all, this is a driver that presents a clean and classic shape.
The X-Hot driver makes use of Callaway's OptiFit adapter. This is nice, as it allows for easy interchanging of shafts from head to head throughout the Callaway lineup if necessary (RAZR Fit, X-Hot Pro, and RAZR Fit Xtreme) rather than requiring a unique adapter. Outside of the shaft change capability, the OptiFit adapter allows for three different face settings. The X-Hot actually has a square face angle when the cog on the adapter is set to its neutral setting (S). When the adapter is set to open (O) the face angle is opened 2.5 degrees and the effective loft drops 1 degree. Finally, should the adapter be set to closed (C) then the face will sit closed 1.5 degrees and the effective loft will increase 1 degree.
In all, I've always been a big fan of the OptiFit because it is just so simple. You can change the shaft, you can open it, and you can close it. Very few golfers need much more than that in my opinion. With the X-Hot driver I think the adapter's adjustability capabilities work as well as ever since the driver itself is streamlined and simplified (on the outside) to be clean and easy just as the OptiFit is. With each adjustment I could clearly see differences in my flight patterns, both from a launch standpoint as well as tendency to fade or draw more, which left me with no doubt that the OptiFit does exactly what it is intended to do. Obviously, there is more adjustability out there in some other heads, but sometimes more isn't always better.
I'm a believer in sound and feel being intertwined with each-other, and far as that qualifier goes, Callaway knocked it out of the park with the X-Hot driver. I can honestly say that on a well struck shot the sound is unlike any other I have heard in a driver. It's the ultimate combination of being muted yet solid and without the harsh metallic tendencies some drivers have. It should be stated though that the sound is not the same tone on extreme misses across the face, which is not to say it becomes a bad sound. It just means that you can hear a difference that gives plenty of feedback as to where the miss was. You really do get the feeling of the ball launching off of the face thanks not only to the sound but also the Callaway "speed-frame face" design. This design is intended to increase ball speed across the face. In my time with the club I certainly think it achieves this goal along with still allowing plenty of feedback.
The non-pro X-Hot driver comes paired with a Project X Velocity shaft. which is available in light, regular, and stiff flexes in all of the different lofts. This is an area that has definitely drawn some talk out there, as this pearl and red version is a "proprietary" shaft, or what many would refer to as a "made for". It bears to keep in mind that these shafts are designed to not only pair with the head, but also reach the broadest spectrum of golfers out there. Just because it is not a "real deal" shaft, it should not be written off for everyone before they try it.
For the purpose of this review I was using the stiff version of the shaft and put it through its paces on the range and on the course. I found the shaft to be a high-launcher with a mid-spin level and a pretty smooth feel to it. I will add however that this version of the Velocity felt to play a bit weak to flex for what I am used to and lagged a bit through the zone for me. Again, I think it is important to try it before you knock it since every golfers swing is different.
The X-Hot was designed to be the most forgiving of Callaway's 2013 line of drivers. I hit the ball all over the face of this driver and can safely say it is impressively forgiving, especially off of the heel. Obviously, all misses will be met with distance losses of some sort, but the thin walls and "speed-frame face" of the driver really seems to combine well to minimize the amount of ball speed that is lost on extreme miss-hits. For the part of the market this driver is aimed at, this should prove incredibly beneficial for helping to keep the ball in play.
Additionally, the X-Hot line has interior weighting that is meant to promote a draw, as most average golfers struggle with losing the ball right. The good thing about this is that Callaway has not put out a wonky looking offset driver. Instead they altered the interior weighting to keep the head-shape clean and attractive. Additionally, Callaway's research led them to see that as more loft is needed in a driver then typically more draw bias is needed as well, so as the lofts increase in the X-Hot, so too does that interior weighting. I know that some have put a lot of concern into this aspect out of fear of hooking the ball. I can safely say I still saw no issues working the ball to the right or hitting cuts using the 11.5 with the highest draw weighting.

Begovic previously insisted that he was not thinking about transfer speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford, but now admits it is something he would be keen to entertain.
The 25-year-old shot-stopper has impressed at Stoke since signing for £3.25m from Portsmouth in 2010, and could be worth upwards of £10m if the Potters were to allow Begovic to leave having already signed Jack Butland as a replacement.
Begovic is currently on international duty with Bosnia - who he helped defeat Greece 3-1 last Friday - with reports suggesting Manchester United scouts were in attendance.
"I'm glad that they do because that means I'm doing something good. It gives me more motivation to do better and better.
