Arsenal FC : The Good, Bad And 'Invisibility Cloak' Of Lukas Podolski - The Hard Tackle

Lukas Podolski has made a fairly good start to his Arsenal career this season. We take a look at his report card so far and point out the good and the not so good aspect of his game.

Such is the exalted position occupied by footballing media in today's sporting landscape that they effortlessly drive season-long narratives for football clubs. For Arsenal this season, it's all been about the departure of Robin van Persie and how Wenger's hastily accrued band of ragamuffins have failed to deal with said departure. Every decent chance missed is accompanied by 'van Persie would have scored that' and other nuggets of wisdom-y wisdom; every Man United win with van Persie's name on the score sheet elicits an 'oh how Arsenal could do with this man in their ranks!'; and any particularly impressive piece of skill by Arsenal's current forwards results in 'that was a Persiesque first touch' and similar encomiums. Yes, we get it.

Not that the media are wrong, per se. The Gunners definitely miss having the silky-toed Dutchman lead the line for them; any team would feel the pinch when one of the best strikers in Europe leaves in his prime. Where the media are wrong is in measuring Arsenal's replacement strikers, namely Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, by the same yardstick as they do van Persie. As players adapting to a new club and a new country, it would be nigh-on unrealistic to expect from them the footballing pyrotechnics that van Persie performed in his final season at the Emirates. Viewed in isolation, both of Arsenal's newly-unwrapped frontmen have had decent starts to their careers in red-and-white. We focus here on Lukas Podolski, who was purchased from Cologne for roughly 10 million euros and has played both as a lone striker and wide left forward for the Gunners so far.

When word of Podolski signing for Arsenal reached their eclectic fan-base, there was virtually an equal split between expectation and apprehension: expectation that FC Cologne's hero and one of the cornerstones of the German national team would rise to the next level and prove to be a success, and apprehension that Prince Poldi would turn out to be an indolent damp squib as he had at Bayern Munich. Seven months down the line, there has been appreciable evidence to lend credence to both of the aforementioned theories, as Podolski has intermittently delighted and disappointed.

Podolski's skill-set is well publicized: a humdinger of a left foot, bloody-minded directness, quick transitions on the counter-attack, and accurate delivery from the wings. There's a wonderful conciseness in the way he plays when on song – every pass is crisp, every give-and-go is no showier than it needs to be, every tackle put in is sans frills, tracking back is done with a minimum of fuss… a confident and happy Podolski is unbeeindruckt in the face of all dangers. Such laconicism flourishes best when it's surrounded by expressiveness, and Arsenal's unperturbed German has expectedly had his best games when the entire midfield and strike-force have fired on all cylinders. Podolski will never run rings around the entire opposition team and score with a bodacious pelvic thrust; he will be the one fizzing a simple but dangerous cross into the box, or kneeing the ball into the net after a corner-time scramble, or busting a gut to provide a supporting run on the counter.

Podolski's best game in an Arsenal shirt so far came against West Ham at home, and his performance that day showcased the trademark terseness of expression perfectly. After the visitors had taken a shock lead, Podolski brought the Gunners back into the match with a tracer-bullet of a shot from thirty yards out. Then, in the second half, he played an understated but effective one-two with Giroud before slipping in Cazorla for 3-1. Barely a minute later, he had the ball on the left wing again, and sprayed an unerring cross-field ball for Walcott to score. Again, the replays were barely over when he charged down the side like a methodical rhino and hit a rapier-like low cross for Giroud to prod home. Net-buster of a goal in the first half aside, there was no 'Oh snap!' moment of genius from Podolski in that game, no transcendental piece of skill that made one rub one's eyes. It was simple things done simply, it was moving from point A to Z without taking a myriad stops in needless alphabets along the way.

As Podolski is economical in his virtues, so is he indifferent in his deficiencies. Rarely will you see Podolski having an abjectly horrible game, misplacing passes like billy-o, or tanking shots left, right, and centre. Podolski's bad games are his invisible games: games where the sum of his contributions will be to pass the ball back to his full-back, put a sporadic foot or two out for tackling, and generally shy away from any significant contribution. While Gervinho hilariously fails (but tries) and draws all manner of invective in his direction, Podolski will lounge on a hammock and sip pina colada on the left wing.

A player occasionally switching off for games is not unheard of, but this current Arsenal team doesn't have the required quality to successfully carry passengers. On a bad day, Podolski has all the end product of a rigor-mortis stricken cadaver. This was never more evident than against Bradford. Podolski was almost a microcosm of Arsenal that rainy night: technically superior to the opposition, but hemmed down and forced into impotence by drive, passion, and hard work. He unfailingly had two players snapping at his heels, haranguing him into making mistakes, and he couldn't handle it.

It's said about great players that they can produce a moment of brilliance even on a bad day, but Podolski seems more suited to moments of efficiency than moments of brilliance. Granted that he has a well-honed poacher's instinct, something that's in short supply at Ashburton Grove, but one only needs to look at how Podolski gets substituted around the 70 minute mark as a rule to know that he's not really your 'moment of magic' type of player. Not in Arsene Wenger's eyes so far, anyway.

To conclude, Podolski's report card so far would read something to the tune of 'Good start, but can do better'. His playing style is rife with a common sense that's not-so-common, and one can see him taking charge as one of the leaders of this team in the years to come. However, there are a fair few crooked arrows in his quiver that he needs to straighten out if he wants to make the leap up from Prince to King.

Glove me, glove me not: Joe Hart blunders then saves pen to leave Mancini ... - Mirror.co.uk

Manchester City cat brilliantly made amends for clanger against Chelsea but if Etihad boss is grateful he's got a funny way of showing it

Joe Hart gave away a penalty and then produced a stunning match-turning display to keep Manchester City's faint title hopes alive in the 2-0 victory over Chelsea.

The City boss had warned before this Etihad showdown with Chelsea one more mistake from the country's No.1 and he would be axed.

And, despite a brilliant spot kick save to deny Frank Lampard his 200th goal for the London club, the Italian manager was grudging in his praise for Hart, insisting he was to blame for conceding the penalty in the first place.

"I say to Joe every time when he does a fault - I think him and Kolo (Toure) both made a mistake to concede the penalty, and I told him. But afterwards, he was fantastic, and I told him that too," Mancini insisted, with a back-handed compliment.

"I think Joe is the best keeper in England and one of the best in Europe. I'm pleased for him as he saved the penalty but I think a goalkeeper like him can do better before the penalty, when the long ball comes he should be there.

"I wanted him perfect and he could be perfect if he wants. It's important for concentration always because he is the best. One player who is the best should do everything well. This is important for us."

With Chelsea players and staff gesturing wildly from the sidelines that Hart should have been dismissed when he brought down Demba Ba to concede the penalty, Mancini even joked his keeper was lucky not to have seen red.

"If he's a City player then it is possible for him to be sent off yeah - if he is our player then of course he could have been sent off for it," he said.

"I joke of course, I don't think it was a red card, the ball went out and usually when the keeper is the last player and the ball goes out then the referee doesn't send them off in England."

Hart's save was crucial because Chelsea had looked determined in their ultra defensive approach to the game, and a goal at that point would have given them something to cling on to.

Immediately afterwards, though, a brilliant individual effort from Yaya Toure broke the deadlock, and with the visitors unable to change their negative approach, City cruised to victory, leaving the keeper to admit he had a unfair advantage for the spot kick.

"I work a lot with Lamps on England duty and he is a great penalty taker - he's a big hero of mine if I'm honest," he explained.

"It was nice to save it but I'd given it away so I had to save it. We spoke about it but I'm sure it's not mind games with Frank, he's a strong man and knows what he's going to do, so he's not going to be put off by an idiot like me!

"It was a case of trying to go the right way and getting a strong hand on it. I just want to make saves for Manchester City, I enjoyed doing it in this game - simple as that."

Mancini insisted this win keeps alive City's faint title hopes when he said: "Maybe 12 points is too many, but I think football is finished when it is finished, in the last minute of the last game", but for his opposite number Benitez, the fight now is not for second with yesterday's opponents, but for a Champions' League place.

With the London club so inconsistent since the Spaniard arrived, he admitted they will now have to keep a firm eye on Spurs, Arsenal and Everton who are queuing up behind them to challenge for a top four spot.

"We are disappointed because this was a chance to get closer to City in second, but now we have to keep fighting for the top four," he explained.

"We knew that by winning we would be even closer but we didn't do it and we didn't play well in the first half. You have to carry now though - we know that we still have to do our job because Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton are close. We have to show our quality in every competition."

Borussia Monchengladbach v Borussia Dortmund Betting Critique...

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH v BORUSSIA DORTMUNDFootball : Germany : BundesligaSunday, 24th February 2013 - Kickoff 2:30pm GMT This could seem a walkover for Dortmund predicated on that last gain, and the actual fact they won the reverse 5-0 in the home. The last 2 meetings have been acquired 5-0 and 2-0, but you will spot the last 2 visits here have seen them only attract 1-1 and drop 1-0. Monchengladbach are going to give them a battle here. There's of course the problem that Dortmund is likely to be distracted with the Champions League. They received 2-2 at Donestsk but they'd a guy lost to Hamburg 4-1! and sent down at home before that tie were so diverted! They'll perhaps not lose that way here, but where their brains will be before a massive game against Shakhtar you have to wonder. Monchengladbach have won their last 3 home games, so will not throw at all, particularly since they will poorly want revenge for that 5-0 loss, their heaviest defeat of the summer season. The worry is goals have been allowed 33 by their defence, which through 22 activities, destroying the great work done by the offence, which has scored 31. That 33 goals is already more than they conceded last year, however Dortmund do not exactly come here with an excellent defense, as the 26 they have delivered is also already more than last season's total allowed. Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 Borussia Dortmund

Iker Casillas says his recovery from a broken bone in his hand is certainly going better than expected and he might be straight back between your Real Madrid articles as soon as late March.

Casillas' hand was broken by an accidental end from his team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa all through Madrid's Copa del Rey quarter-final game at the Mestalla on January 23.

It absolutely was feared he'd face 90 days on the sidelines, and the club moved quickly to signal Diego Lopez for 3.5 million from Sevilla to perform in their likely season-defining games against Barcelona in the Copa and Manchester United in the Champions League.

The Madrid club chief told reporters on Thursday evening, at the beginning of a new club shop at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, that the first schedule had only been a worst-case scenario.

"I am feeling quite positive," Casillas said. "The physician gave the worst-case scenario to me, he explained 90 days it could get. But yesterday when the splint was removed, I was told I'd four weeks left. Now I am doing active exercises to obtain flexibility and energy back in the finger."

Casillas said he had been working hard at Madrid's Valdebebas education center to obtain right back playing as soon as possible.

"Until now I have perhaps not had much power in it, but I am getting it back little by little," he explained. "We have reached the halfway point of the injury. I've still got per month to go. I'll have to work more and experience more to get right back the mobility of before. I am getting excited about returning. It's worse being off the pitch than on it."

The event was also attended by Casillas' team-mates including Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria, Jose Callejon, Nacho and Kaka, although coach Jose Mourinho was absent.

Alonso told reporters that he didn't know yet whether he'd cure his crotch issue with time for next Tuesday's Copa semi-final second leg at Barcelona's Camp Nou.

"They may have the support of these fans," he said. "It will probably be described as a concern. The medial side that scores first is going to be favourites. Old Trafford is a good ground and it's the type of match all of us want to play. The tie is very open."

Di Maria stated that it could fit Madrid to be playing abroad in both of the forthcoming, potentially season-defining, games.

"Things are going well and develop to carry on this way," he said. "We know that we've to have huge matches in both tournaments and that it'll maybe not be easy. Maybe playing away is going to be inside our favor because we prosper when things are against us. We've had this week to work with the easiest way to approach the activities. I am hoping everything goes well."

Benzema, who remains any doubt for Saturday evening's La Liga sport at Deportivo La Coruna, said he wasn't focused on his current poor form before goal.

Ricardo Kaka executed well in the game vs Deportivo La Coruna

"From the first minute of the second half we found a change of attitude. We did not get because of the alternatives, that have been made in the minute of the second half, but because of the change we made. It had been the attitude of all of the people that started the comeback.

"It is true that actually he [Kaka] is playing well. He is helped by his state of mind and this is important for the group, that he is another option and that he's playing well. That is usually good.

Kaka's performance also received the praise of assistant coach Aitor Karanka, who had been pleased about the reaction of the group after planning behind to a Riki attack on 35 minutes.

The gain moved Real to within 13 factors of league leaders Barcelona, before Blaugrana edged out Sevilla afterwards Saturday morning. Regardless of the border remaining the same, Kaka thinks victory over Depor may enhance Real's chances of claiming wallpaper this period.

QPR 0-2 Man Utd – Red Devils Go 15 Points Clear After Hard ...

In winning 2-1 at Loftus Road on Saturday, Manchester United extended their lead over Man City at the top of the table to 15 points and in doing so, all but rubber-stamped their 2012/13 title win.

Right-back Rafael was the unlikely goal-scorer for the visitors on 23, smashing in a wonder-strike from 20 yards after the Hoops had started well enough.

After the break, Harry Redknapp's side pushed for an equaliser with Loic Remy and Christopher Samba both going close. However, Fergie's charges held firm and eventually went further ahead on 80 minutes, courtesy of Ryan Giggs (on his 999th senior appearance for club and country).

Surely a 15 point gap with 12 games to go is far too big for City to claw back now? As for Rangers, they stay bottom seven points away from safety.

(Video) Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 Borussia Dortmund: Champions ...

Germany defender Mats Hummels's late header gave Borussia Dortmund a Champions League lifeline with a 2-2 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk in Wednesday's last 16, first-leg, clash.

However, Dortmund's impressive result will be overshadowed by the deaths of five fans and 12 injured when a plane from Odessa, south Ukraine, carrying 45 people crashed while landing at Donetsk airport, just hours before kick-off.

Dortmund twice came from behind and were heading towards their first European defeat of the season before centre-back Hummels powered home from a corner, three minutes from time.

"Certainly there were a few dangerous moments in defence, but against such an attack-minded team you can never avoid this.

Donetsk captain Darijo Srna's free-kick was cancelled out by a first-half equaliser from Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski before Brazilian Douglas Costa restored Shakhtar's advantage 22 minutes from time.

Hummels' header puts Dortmund in pole position to reach the quarter-finals for the second-leg at Borussia's Signal Iduna Park stadium in a fortnight.

Having beaten Real Madrid, Manchester United and Ajax to win Group D, Dortmund came perilously close to joining current holders Chelsea in suffering defeat at Shakhtar's notoriously tricky Donbass Arena.

Dortmund made a bright start when Hummels clattered the woodwork with a bullet header from a corner with only 17 minutes gone.

Donetsk took the lead when Srna smashed a free-kick over the wall and into the top right-hand corner with Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller grasping at air on 31 minutes.

Borussia responded and equalised ten minutes later when a Mario Goetze cross wrong-footed Lewandowski and the Donetsk defence, but the Poland star responded quickest to slot his shot home.

Donetsk went back into the lead when Costa scored a dream goal on 62 minutes just six minutes after coming off the bench.

Both Hummels and Germany team-mate Marcel Schmelzer failed to deal with a 40 metre pass out of defence from Donetsk defender Yaroslav Rakytskyy, but Costa controlled the ball with one touch, then slammed his shot home with the next.

At the other end, Lewandowski went close moments later as the German champions stepped up the pace in a bid to draw level again.

With time almost up, Schmelzer's pin-point accurate corner from the left was met in the middle by Hummels with the Donetsk defence nowhere to be seen to give Dortmund a deserved draw.

Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich, 2013 UEFA Champions League ...

A terrible start has put Arsenal into a massive hole, and they're going to need to put together a brilliant second half performance to salvage this Champions League tie. Bayern Munich never looked much like conceding after the opening minutes, struck early, then piled on the misery to carry a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Arsenal got off to the brighter start of the two teams, creating a couple of half-chances in the first five minutes. Jack Wilshere started both moves with great balls out wide, but a Santi Cazorla cross in the 3rd minute was claimed by Manuel Neuer, while a similar move through Walcott produced a corner that Arsenal were unable to make anything out of.

In the 7th minute, Toni Kroos struck from 20 yards out to give Bayern the lead. A low cross from Franck Ribery to the top of the penalty area wasn't picked up by anyone, as Mikel Arteta failed to track Kroos and Per Mertesacker failed to step up. With no one closing him down, Kroos took a rip and placed a brilliant shot into the back of the net to notch a big away goal.

Things got worse for Arsenal in the 21st minute. Set piece defending has been an issue for Arsenal all season, and they looked horrible in conceding their second. Daniel van Buyten was uncontested as he rose up to head on goal at the near post, and Wojciech Szczęsny made a save. No one was watching Thomas Müller, though, and the Bayern attacker poked in the rebound.

Both sides had solid spells of possession for the rest of the half, with Arsenal having more of the ball, but Bayern backed off following their second goal and looked content to play a more defensive game. Just before the end of the half, they hit on a counter and Mario Mandžukić missed a close-range header by inches, failing to capitalize on an opportunity that would have all but ended this tie. Arsenal are going to need something special to get back in this, and they're going to need to avoid conceding again as well.

Eredivisie wrap: PSV hit back at home - Soccerway

PSV consolidated their place on top of the Eredivisie table with a hard-fought 2-1 win over FC Utrecht at Philips Stadion on Saturday.

And Dick Advocaat's men got off to the worst possible start with Utrecht forward Jacob Mulenga putting the away side ahead after just 10 minutes.

However, Dries Mertens drew PSV level with half an hour played and they didn't look back from there, piling on the pressure as they searched for the lead.

The home side eventually hit the front through Georginio Wijnaldum after 65 minutes and were able to stay strong at the back to seal the vital win.

PSV now move six points clear of Ajax, Twente and Feyenoord at the top of the table with 10 matches left to play while Utrecht drop to sixth place.

Elsewhere, Twente missed the chance to move to outright second after being held to a shock 1-1 draw by bottom club Willem II.

Steve McClaren's side appeared to be heading for victory after a Douglas goal on the stroke of half-time put them 1-0 ahead but Willem refused to be denied with substitute Ricardo Ippel popping up in stoppage time to steal a dramatic point.

Twente are now level with Ajax and Feyenoord in third with both sides still to play this round while Willem move to within five points of safety.

In the day's other games, AZ Alkmaar played out a draw 2-2 with Roda JC while NAC Breda and Heracles also couldn't be separated as they drew 1-1.

UEFA Europa League 2013: Early games recap - SBNation.com

The defending champions Atletico Madrid were knocked out by Rubin Kazan, Spurs were saved by a stoppage time goal from Mousa Dembele and Newcastle advanced thanks to a penalty goal from Shola Ameobi. Just another day in the Europa League.

It was a good day for two EPL teams as Spurs were saved by a last minute goal and Newcastle advanced thanks to a second half penalty. Things weren't so great for the defending champions Atletico Madrid who were knocked out by Rubin Kazan. Here's a recap off all of today's early action in the Europa League.

Radamel Falcao scored in the 84th minute and Kazan's César was red carded four minutes later, but it wasn't enough to save the defending champions from exiting the tournament. Atletico had plenty of chances but by the time Falcao's free kick beat Sergei Ryzhikov, it was too little too late. Ryzhikov was outstanding for Rubin Kazan making nine saves.

Cluj's hopes of a miraculous second leg comeback were dashed after 21 minute when Rodrigo Palacio broke behind the high defensive line and drew goalkeeper Mário Felgueiras off his line before crossing to Fredy Guarin for a fairly pedestrian re-direction from close range. Guarin added a second right before halftime when Felgueiras fumbled an easy cover in his own box and Guarin took advantage putting the ball in the empty net. Things got worse for Cluj in the 80th minute when Mario Camora was red carded and seven minutes later Inter's Marco Benassi added a third goal, rubbing a little more salt in the wound.

Basel didn't seem interested in doing anything more than defending their lead from the first leg but things still got wild late. After a fairly dull hour, Dnipro's hopes seemed squashed when Nikola Kalinic was shown a straight red card in the 63rd minute. Less than ten minutes later, Fabian Frei threw Dnipro a lifeline committing a handball in the box. Frei was sent off and Yevhen Seleznyov scored the penalty, bringing his side back within a goal. Dnipro's hopes were finally extinguished in the 81st minute when Roman Zozulya fouled Valentin Stocker in the box and Fabian Schar buried his penalty attempt.

Shola Ameobi's 64th minute penalty was all Newcastle needed to advance to the Round of 16. Newcastle earned the penalty Oleksandr Goryainov and Papa Gueye got their signals completely crossed and fouled Moussa Sissoko. No doubt there are shirtless Geodies celebrating in the streets of Kharkiv tonight.

After a wild 3-3 first leg in Germany, Lazio shut down Monchengladbach behind first half goals from Antonio Candreva and Alvaro González.

Stuttgart wasn't all that great in home first leg allowing an away goal but it ended up not mattering thanks to goals from Arthur Boka and Christian Gentner.

Greuther FArth bag head mentor Mike BAskens - SBNation.com

Scott BAskens has transformed into the last Bundesliga team to be sacked in 2010. Greuther FArth have declared which they have parted ways with manager Mike BAskens effective immediately. BAskens may be the last Bundesliga boss dismissed this year. BAskens, 44, got over FArth throughout the winter break of the 2009-10 period. That season he saved them from relegation, and FArth just missed on advertising another season. In his next time in charge, Der KleeblAtter won the 2.Bundesliga and secured promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time ever. It had been always planning to be considered a long shot for FArth to keep in the Bundesliga, and they have definitely taken their bumps over the road so far in 2010. Through 22 activities, FArth has just won twice, and none of them have now been at home in the Trolli Arena. Helmut Hack, the club's president, spoke on BAskens: "Because we know how much we have Mike BAskens to thank for, it had been an extremely hard decision for us. We still have a chance of survival and we wanted to decide to try and give some fresh impulse." to the group Sporting director Rouven SchrAder and U-23 coach Ludwig Preis can take within the team on a temporary basis. A substitute is going to be appointed later on.

Bundesliga 2013, Week 22 preview and fixtures: Battle for second ...

While Bayern Munich have the title all but wrapped up, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund face each other in a match with second place on the line.

After many weeks of outstanding action in the Champions League and Europa League, the Bundesliga disappointed this week with three draws and three losses. League play returns this weekend with a massive battle for second place going on between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt. Elsewhere, Bayern look to keep cruising at Wolfsburg, Mainz host Schalke who are still trying to regroup, and Werder Bremen look to continue their streak against Freiburg

Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich - 20:30 CET / 2:30 PM ETI could go on a lengthy explanation on why Bayern Munich will come away from the Volkswagen Arena with a victory on Friday afternoon, but it's not really necessary. Simply put: Bayern are playing better than everyone else. They've won all four matches since returning from the winter break outscoring opponents 11-0. Oh, yeah, they're unbeaten in their last twelve. They've also been playing out of their mind away from the Allianz. They have nine wins and one draw, and they have outscored their opponents 25-1. WHAT? I don't like your chances, Wolfsburg.Prediction: Wolfsburg 0 - 3 Bayern Munich

Werder Bremen vs Freiburg - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ETFreiburg have been one of the surprise sides of the season and are currently sitting in fifth place in the Bundesliga table. If you had to guess the team with by far the second best defense in the Bundesliga, you probably wouldn't guess Freiburg. Well, you'd be wrong. Pavel Krmas and Diagne Fallou have anchored a defense that is only bested by Bayern at this point in the season. They've only allowed 20 goals thus far, and the pair have been a solid wall in front of goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. Werder Bremen are all the way down in 11th place, but only three points separates the two sides. They've been very up and down this season with eight wins, four draws, and nine losses. Can they put things together and grab a huge win over a tough opponent?Prediction: Werder Bremen 1 - 0 Freiburg

Bayer Leverkusen vs Augsburg - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ETAfter a stellar first half of the season where they were basically the only side that could still see Bayern Munich in the table, Bayer Leverkusen have hit a few snags since returning for the winter break with draws against Freiburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach and a loss to Borussia Dortmund. In the Europa League midweek, they were downright awful against Benfica. They've started to collapse a bit defensively, and Augsburg is a good opponent to be coming in and instill a little confidence in your team. Since the winter break, Augsburg are undefeated. The problem is only one of those four matches has been a win. They need the points. They're one point out of the relegation playoff spot and nine points from escaping relegation completely.Prediction: Bayer Leverkusen 2 - 0 Augsburg

Fortuna Düsseldorf vs Greuther Fürth - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ETOof, this match could be a little brutal to watch. Fortuna Düsseldorf are sitting in 15th place, while Greuther Fürth are propping up the bottom of the table. While both of Fürth's wins this season have come away from home, Düsseldorf should handle them in this match. It'll be a grind.Prediction: Fortuna Düsseldorf 1 - 0 Greuther Fürth

Mainz vs Schalke - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ETWhile sitting back and thinking about what is going on at Schalke, I believe I finally figured it out. The team that we saw through early November was abducted by aliens and replaced by a team of awful, awful, awful players. Nope? That's not right? Uh oh, they're in trouble. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is expected to miss another match for the club, and there are some rumors that Jens Keller is thinking of going to a strikerless formation. Mainz are in sixth place in the table thanks to an impressive defense. Can they keep this Schalke side from scoring? Yeah, they sure can. Will they? I have no reason why I'm taking them, but I think Schalke somehow... Somehow... Take this one.Prediction: Mainz 0 - 1 Schalke

Hamburg vs Borussia Mönchengladbach - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ETHamburg took all six points from Borussia Dortmund this year with 3-2 victory at the Volksparkstadion and a stunning 4-1 smashing at the Westfalenstadion last weekend. They followed up the first match with a 2-2 draw at Gladbach. They can definitely do it again. Hamburg are playing well with Artjoms Rudnevs and Heung-Min Son with ten and nine goals respectively. Borussia Mönchengladbach's games since returning from the winter break with one win, one loss, and two draws. Couple that with their midweek 3-3 draw with Lazio, and you see they're not only scoring goals but conceding them as well.Prediction: Hamburg 2 - 2 Borussia Mönchengladbach

Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt - 18:30 CET / 9:30 AM ETFar and away the candidate for "Match of the Weekend", Eintracht Frankfurt travel to the Westfalenstadion to take on Borussia Dortmund. The hosts are in second place and the visitors in fourth place, but they are only separated by two points. BVB had a difficult match midweek in the Champions league away to Shakhtar Donetsk. Both teams have a propensity for high scoring matches this season, so it should be a barnburner.Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 2 - 3 Eintracht Frankfurt

Nürnberg vs Hannover - 15:30 CET / 9:30 AM ETNürnberg seem like they're too far away to be bothered by relegation, but they're not playing well enough to challenge for a European place. They've played okay since the winter break and get the added bonus of Hannover coming of a European League game. Russia was unkind to Hannover, as they were handed a 3-1 loss at the hands of Anzhi Makhachkala Thursday. They've been really struggling defensively this season, but Nürnberg don't really have the players to give them a lot of problems Sunday.Prediction: Nürnberg 1 - 1 Hannover

Hoffenheim vs Stuttgart - 17:30 CET / 11:30 AM ETStuttgart have lost their last five Bundesliga matches by a combined score of 14-3. Seriously. They're down in 14th place, and it leaves you wondering just how Bruno Labbadia has a job. The team is listless, and something needs to happen to change things. Yep, I had this team finishing second in the Bundesliga this year. Oof. That was a mistake. Hoffenheim are in the relegation playoff place, but they only have a one point lead over 17th place Augsburg. It's time for Hoffenheim to start shaping up if they want to stay in the Bundesliga.Prediction: Hoffenheim 2 - 2 Stuttgart

Real Madrid vs. Rayo Vallecano: Preview and TV schedule ...

Madrid are more than good enough to beat Rayo, but that's been the case in several games this season in which Madrid has drawn or lost. Rayo badly want points to keep hold on their European spot, but getting them in the Bernabéu is never easy.

Here we are again with Real Madrid, a team that's good enough to beat anyone on any day, but can also find ways to completely underperform in the most random moments. Every week we know that Madrid could role to a multi-goal win but there's that little bit of doubt in the back of our minds that says, but they could not show up and lose.

So which Madrid team will we see this week, fresh off a hard fought draw against Manchester United? With five players either injured or suspended, Mourinho might be a little thin on options but there are still good options. In all likliehood it will come down to whether or not this Madrid team is all in mentally.

Rayo will be hoping for the more lackadaisical version of Madrid as they attempt to hold on to a European spot. Rayo have one six out of their last eight league matches but that's counterbalanced by nine straight defeats against Los Blancos. They've also not won at the Bernabéu since 1996. At this point a draw was bould a big deal, a win would be not only huge but somewhat historic.

Out: Alvaro Arbeloa (suspended), Luka Modric (suspended), Gonzalo Higuain (suspended), Xabi Alonso (groin), Iker Casillas (hand). In doubt: None

Lots of missing faces for Mourinho. The trio of Arbeloa, Modric and Higuain are all serving red card suspensions, while Xabi Alonso is suffering from a groin injury. Iker Casillas remains out with a broken hand. Rayo's Labaka and Garcia are long term issues, but Baptistao should be available despite spraining his ankle early in the week.
