United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has often preferred to play a narrower formation in the middle of the park that has seen Nani often excluded from the starting eleven in favour of including the likes of Shinji Kagawa and Tom Cleverley.
What the Portuguese winger has played, he has often been disappointing and Ferguson has finally ran out of patience with Nani's inconsistent displays.
The player's contract expires at the end of next season and talks over a new deal have stalled. Nani is looking for a wage increase but United feel that the player is already handsomely rewarded.
That could pave the way for a summer exit for the player with United keen to cut their losses now rather than risk losing Nani on a free transfer at the end of next season.
Russian side Zenit St Petersburg and the Milan giants, AC and Inter, are all thought to be interested in the £14 million-rated player.
