Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona target Neymar needs to leave Santos to be seen as ... - Crunchsports.com

Santos striker Neymar, who continues to be linked with the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea and Real Madrid, has been told he needs to move away from South America if he wants to maximise his potential.

Neymar is arguably the most sought after player in world football today, and has also been linked with Bayern Munich, Juventus, Manchester City, rivals Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain in recent months.

The 21-year-old is out of contract in June 2014 and has hinted that he may wait until after the World Cup in his homeland before making a decision about his future.

But Bayern Munich legend Paul Breitner believes the brilliant Brazilian needs to move to Europe as soon as possible if he is to be seen as one of the world's best players.

"No one knows his true potential. He needs to play every day against players like [Franck] Ribery and Cristiano Ronaldo to know whether he's a true star or not," Bretiner, who also had a spell with Real Madrid, told ESPN Brasil.

"Becoming a star only in Brazil is not enough. He needs to prove his class, his level, his skills, where the best football is being played at the moment, and that's in Europe."

He added: "I find it funny when I read that he wants to be the best in the world playing here. Messi wouldn't have become the best player in the word if he had stayed in Argentina, and Neymar won't either."

Barcelona are the bookmakers' favourites to win the race to sign Neymar, and recent reports in Spain have suggested the La Liga leaders will launch a bid when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.
