Maria Sharapova is a dominating force in the claycourt season for any past two years. With 2012, she won three claycourt titles, including the French Open and it is a blemish-free road to claycourt dominance, if not for the specific Serena Williams. During that time, her only loss on clay was about the top-ranked American in the quarterfinals within the Madrid Open.
This season, the pair will meet again within the same tournament, this amount of time in the final and spine on red courts.
It does show on paper that Sharapova's major roadblock the past few years has been Williams. The Russian hasn't won a match against Williams ever since the 2004 WTA Championships and she lags behind within their head-to-head series record from 2-12.
"It's always really difficult against her, " Sharapova talked about. "I haven't had a win against her in several years, but the great element is that I'm extremely setting myself up capable where I can try to change that around.
"I thought I very well against her in Miami to your first set and a half – obviously that's deficiency of, but the goal is usually to keep that level for your match this time and get into my chances, take this opportunities. It's been quite some time since we played for a clay court, too, and every match differs. "
Sharapova is contesting the woman's 50th final. She has got compiled a 29-20 capture in final. A victory on Sunday in the Madrid Open will elevate her ranking returning to world number one.
